With the current government strongly supporting small and women owned businesses, it would seem that there is an increasing trend for small business set asides. Small business set asides are defined as the reserving of an acquisition exclusively for participation by small business concerns.

Under the Small Business Act, the Small Business Administration (SBA) helps to ensure that small businesses (defined as companies with less than 500 employees) have opportunities with federal contracting.  It’s interesting to note that upon further looking into this issue, it appears that small business set asides actually decreased from 1991 to 2001.  Unfortunately the statistics on this information are no longer being calculated as they once were.

However, according to a recent Washington Post article, firms with fewer than 500 employees employ just over half of the country’s workers and create nearly two-thirds of the country’s new jobs.  That statistic, along with the current administration’s plans to increase federal support for small businesses in 2010 and 2011, would indicate an upward trend for small business set asides. Industries that will benefit most from stimulus related small business set asides are those with the biggest impact to create new jobs.  This is where UDig comes in.

As technology is continually evolving, IT jobs will always be a necessity.  This means that an IT staffing firm like UDig is able to have a big impact on creating new jobs.  Additionally, in the current economy, companies are turning more to staffing firms to fill positions, as it saves money and time.  With the combination of a possibility of small business set asides and increased use of staffing firms, UDig should continue to excel in the IT staffing industry.
